Most of us perform spring cleaning every year, but when fall arrives we often feel like squirrels who scurry around storing away nuts for winter. It’s time to freshen up your house before settling in for the cool months of the year, and now is as good a time as any to perform routine maintenance. Follow these six steps for a thorough fall cleaning.
Clean your windows. Your windows should be cleaned about twice per year, to prevent buildup and keep them bright and shiny. Remove all window screens and give them a good wash with a hose, and then the insides and outsides of the glass with a vinegar-based cleaning solution. If your windows have tracks, clean those too. Keeping them clean will allow your windows to continue functioning properly.
Clean out your gutters. Clogged gutters are one of the most common culprits in home water damage events. If they’re clogged, water can back up in your gutters and cause damage to your home. Clean out all leaves and other debris so that water can flow smoothly through gutters and down the downspouts.
Give your garbage can a bath. Even though you haul out your kitchen trash regularly, somehow gunk and goo gets down under the trash can liners. Take it outside for a good rinse with the hose.
Dust your air vents. Dust inside your air vents, or else anything inside them will be blown throughout your house. Performing this chore can cut down on the amount you have to dust other surfaces throughout the home.
Replace your shower curtain. If you haven’t replaced your shower curtain in a while, it’s probably getting moldy and smelly. Clean it with a bleach solution or just toss it out.
Professionally clean your carpets. A good professional cleaning is the best way to extend the life of your carpeting and rugs, and you’ll be amazed at how professional carpet cleaning refreshes an entire room.
