For many homeowners, the kitchen is the focal point of the entire home. It’s where you prepare meals, so you use this room daily – often multiple times per day. And for many of us, the kitchen is also a spot where we spend time together as a family, conduct school experiments, and so much more. So it makes sense that you want the most important room in the house to look and feel just right.
Often that means a kitchen remodel is in order. After a decade or two, kitchens can start to look dated. And beyond aesthetic appeal, kitchens can become outdated with regard to functionality. If it’s time for an upgrade, you might be wondering how long the process will take, and how much disturbance you can expect in your life.
Obviously, the answer to that question will depend upon how extensive of a kitchen remodel you have in mind.
Include the design process. The design process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks or longer, and a lot of it depends upon you. If you know exactly what you want, a redesign can be fairly easy. If you have difficulty making decisions, or if you and your partner disagree on a few elements, this part of the process can take longer. The good news is that there’s no need to tear out your current kitchen elements just yet, so you are still able to use the room throughout the design process.
The demolition. Depending upon how many elements you’re changing, demolition can take a few days or more. If you just want to change the kitchen floor, it can usually be removed in one day, but if you’re tearing out cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, and even walls, you’re looking at a longer time frame. Just prior to the demolition process, decide how you’ll be preparing meals for the duration of your kitchen remodel.
Rebuilding. And of course, this is the final stage of the kitchen remodel process. If you’ve ordered custom cabinets, those can take weeks to arrive (but hopefully your demolition was delayed and scheduled with this in mind). Flooring installation can take a day or two, and then you will need countertops and appliances. Installing your new kitchen could take about a week, but it might be longer if you’re also rewiring the electricity for new lighting or changing the plumbing. Extensive work might require several weeks. And remember, different contractors might have conflicting schedules.
